In 2010, a New York Times reporter asked Steve Jobs how his children liked the iPad his company had just unveiled. The device was the most desirable object of the year, and Jobs had every reason to boast. Instead he said his kids had not used it. "We limit how much technology our kids use at home," he told the reporter. The man who put a screen in a billion pockets was, in his own house, holding the line against them.
What the people who build the screens do at home
Jobs was not alone, and the pattern became a story the press told for years: the engineers of Silicon Valley raising their own children on pens, paper and mud. Chris Anderson, a former editor of Wired, called himself and his wife "fascists" about their children's screen access, adding that he had seen the dangers of technology firsthand. The Waldorf School of the Peninsula, near Google's campus, fills roughly three-quarters of its seats with the children of tech-industry parents and keeps screens out of the classroom until the eighth grade.
That story is worth telling accurately, because it has been exaggerated. Later reporting found that most tech executives send their children to ordinary, well-funded public schools where screens are used freely, and that the "tech bosses ban screens" headline was built on a handful of vivid examples rather than a rule. The truth is more useful than the myth. These parents did not eliminate technology. They set boundaries around it, delayed it, and paid close attention to it, precisely because they understood how the products were designed to hold a child's attention.
Why this is worth getting right
The concern is not that screens are wicked. It is that reading and screens compete for the same scarce resource, which is a child's attention, and they train it in opposite directions. A 2025 study from the long-running LIFE Child project at Leipzig University tested more than a thousand children on a computer-based attention task. Reading was positively related to attention performance; television and video games were negatively related to it. The researchers were careful to say this shows association rather than proof of cause, but the direction matched a large body of earlier work.

The deep-reading brain, and why it has to be built
The cognitive neuroscientist Maryanne Wolf has spent her career on what she calls the reading circuit. Her central finding is that no one is born able to read. The brain has no dedicated region for it, so every child who learns to read builds the circuit new, wiring together vision, language, memory and feeling into something that did not exist before. And crucially, the circuit takes the shape of what it practices on.
Practice on dense, linear text and the brain builds the slow, deep-reading circuit: the one that follows a long argument, holds a character's perspective, draws inferences and feels empathy. Practice mostly on screens, where the eye learns to skim, scan and jump between fragments, and Wolf argues the deeper processes may never fully form. She calls skim-reading the new normal and warns that a generation fluent in it may struggle with the slower work of reflection.
Her proposal is not to reject screens. It is a sequence. Wolf borrows the idea of the "biliterate brain": build the deep-reading circuit first, on physical books, in the early years, and introduce screens deliberately afterward, once the foundation is laid. Establish the print circuit, then teach the child to use digital text well. Order matters, because the brain built first is the one a child keeps returning to.
Picture two paths through the same brain
One child spends the early years turning pages, following one long thread at a time, learning that meaning arrives slowly and rewards patience. Another spends them tapping between bright fragments, each one replaced before it finishes. Both are learning. They are simply building different brains, and the one built first is the one that feels like home.
What screens actually displace
There is a simpler mechanism underneath the neuroscience, and researchers call it the displacement hypothesis. A day has a fixed number of hours. Time in front of a screen is time not spent on something else, and for young children that something else is often the reading, talking and playing that build language. Studies of shared reading find that reading with a child explains a meaningful share of the differences in early language skills, regardless of the book's format. The problem with heavy screen use is partly what it does and largely what it crowds out.
This reframes the whole question. The goal is not to win a war against devices. It is to protect the activities screens tend to displace, so that reading, conversation and unstructured play keep their place in the day.
The part the panic gets wrong
It would be dishonest to present this as settled and one-sided. A 2025 review in the Journal of Research in Reading examined the popular claim that screens simply steal children's focus while books sharpen it, and found the picture more complicated than the headlines suggest, with digital reading itself showing mixed rather than uniformly negative effects. Not all screen time is equal: a video call with a grandparent, an interactive story read together, a documentary watched and discussed are different from a stream of auto-playing clips. The evidence points not at zero screens but at intention, quality, and above all sequence.
Fear is a poor guide here. A parent who bans everything raises a child who binges the moment they get access, and a parent who supervises nothing cedes the child's attention to companies engineering for engagement. The tech executives got this part right: boundaries and attention, not prohibition.
How this applies today
Build the book habit before the screen habit. Wolf's sequence is the single most useful idea here. In the early years, weight the day toward physical books and delay recreational screens, so the deep-reading circuit forms first. A child who is read to often arrives at screens with a foundation already in place.
Protect the displaced activities, not just the clock. Rather than counting screen minutes alone, guard the things screens crowd out: the bedtime story, the meal without devices, the stretch of boredom that turns into invented play. If those survive, the screen time that remains does less harm.
Model it, because they watch you more than the screen. Children copy caregiver media habits closely. A parent absorbed in a phone teaches that phones are where attention goes. A parent visibly reading teaches the opposite, and it is the most persuasive lesson available.
Make the good book easier to reach than the device. Attention follows the path of least resistance. A book within arm's reach and a tablet that takes effort to retrieve will, over a childhood, tilt thousands of small choices toward reading.
Keep the formats that count. Audiobooks, being read to, and a shared story on a screen all build language. The enemy is not every pixel; it is the passive, endless, solitary stream. Choose the screen time that involves a human, a story, or a conversation.
